Message We buy the GT28RS turbos brand new direct from Garrett and make the appropriate modifications to the compressor housing to make them a bolt on. Which requires a total of 6 custom CNC machined pieces, none of which effect the actual performance of the turbo itself. Because of overly conservative clearances by Garrett on the compressor side of the turbo leaving a lot of space between the compressor housing and the compressor wheel, we have recently started performing some modification to the backplate of the compressor housing to tighten the turbo up a little. The excessive clearances we have found on the Disco Potatoes direct from Garrett have been deemed excessive and inefficient for a compressor by all the turbo experts we have consulted. I have been told by a Garret distributor that there was no way that those compressor clearances were that much on a Garrett turbo. Then I got to go pull one of the shelf and he agreed with me. He them proceeded to tell me that all Garrett's stuff is built in Mexican plants now, their quality control has gone to hell, and that they engineer stuff on the loose side not for performance but just to give it a cushion.

It is my understanding from the JWT website and other sources that JWT buys the same turbos from Garrett and performs the same type of modifications to make them fit for their 700BB. I have no idea if they are modifying the compressor clearances or not, I would like to see a set sometime but as of now we've never seen a set of the 700BB.

There was a report of a problem out of one of our 700BB turbos that someone posted on here about. My response is that I sent those turbos back to Garrett and complained for a few weeks, they sent them back and told me there was nothing wrong with them. Whether that is the case or not I do not know, we have yet to put them on another car. I can say one thing though, the likelyhood of getting a bad one from us is the same as getting a bad one from JWT. They all come from the same stock and there are always a few bad apples in every stock, especially Mexican apples.
